Melissa Furneaux, BSc., HHC, RHN – Holistic Health Counselor, Registered Holistic Nutritionist

Melissa is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and has graduated with a Diploma in Natural Nutrition from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. She developed an interest in foods and healing while studying sciences at the University of British Columbia. Struggling with weight and body image issues for many years, she began to realize that counting calories, restricting fats, and taking diet pills were not the answer. She came to understand that food is so much more than fuel; physically and energetically, we literally are what we eat. She graduated from UBC with a degree in Biopsychology and Nutritional Science, reflecting her fascination with the interchanging relationships between food, mood, and behavior.

Melissa went on to study at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York City, where her teachers included Paul Pitchford, Annemarie Colbin, Deepak Chopra, Sally Fallon, T. Colin Campbell, Andrew Weil, and many others. Here she graduated with honors with a diploma in Holistic Health Counseling, and is a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. She is passionate about health and wellness, and is now dedicated to helping others find balance and peace in their relationship with food. She is said to have a warm and caring personality and genuinely cares about her clients. Specifically, she focuses on working with individuals who struggle with emotional eating and disordered eating patterns, as well as supporting women during and after pregnancy.

Your Appointment

My approach to wellness is one of balance. Rather than providing lists of “good foods” and “bad foods,” my goal is to empower you to reconnect with your own intuitive sense of eating. It is my belief that the body knows how to heal itself. I am simply here to guide you in choosing the appropriate tools and to support you throughout your journey. The suggestions I make are based on an individual’s current condition, unique constitution, and personal preferences. I recommend small, gradual lifestyle changes that will support the formation of long-term habits.

Before your appointment, I will send you intake forms which you will fill our prior to the appointment and we will discuss during our first session. The first appointment will focus on gathering information about your current habits, your relationship to food, your goals, and your current health concerns. This will help me to make connections between your diet and lifestyle habits, and the symptoms you are currently experiencing. Some advice will be offered during the initial consultation; after your appointment, I will email you a full set of personalized recommendations. Depending on your needs, this may include:

  • nutritional assessment
  • personalised nutrition programs
  • meal plans
  • recipe ideas
  • lifestyle exercises
  • educational handouts
  • grocery store tours: awareness into label reading, how to avoid additives and preservatives and select healthy food choices

Some of the conditions I am able to address include:

  • Digestive issues (bloating, heartburn, etc)
  • Adrenal fatigue and stress management
  • Allergies
  • Hypoglycaemia and Diabetes
  • Cravings
