Aromatherapy is an ancient healing practice describing the distillation of essential oils sourced from plant medicine, for psychological and physical well-being and to stimulate the bodies self healing process.
Essential oils are extracted from plant parts (including the rind, flower, seed, leaf and root) that give the fragrance or flavor of the plant. Essential oils can be steam distilled or expressed thru pressure and are very concentrated forms of volatile oils.
Essential oils can be applied topically on the skin to address many minor ailments including aches and pains, skin conditions, wound healing, general first aid and indigestion, they can be used in a steam for sinus congestion and can also affect mental, physical and emotional shifts in the body. Some essential oils are energizing, others are more sedative in nature and many essential oils contain volatile oils which are highly antiseptic.
Volatile oils can be absorbed through the skin, an example would be to rub a clove of garlic on your feet, in an hour you would have garlic breath, The volatile oils are excreted through the lungs, and in the excretion, are antiseptic to the mucous membranes.
Aromatherapy involves the use of smell to impact emotional change in the body, the oils can enter the body by absorption through the skin or through inhalation; when inhaled, the oils are absorbed through the olfactory system, and messages are sent to the limbic system in the brain, a part of the brain which is connected to our emotional response. The olfactory system also is connected to the hypothalamus, pituitary, nervous and endocrine systems, thus playing a larger role in hormonal health and impacting our emotional state.
