Hibiscus Flowers
Hibiscus flowers are known by their bright burgundy coloured appearance and traditionally for flavoring of herbal beverages. A tart and tasty tea made from the seedpods of the plant. After the petals have fallen, the seedpod develops within a fleshy red calyx from the flower’s base. These red pods are rich in nutrients including vitamin C, calcium, niacin, riboflavin and iron. An antioxidant with immune system supportive properties, Hibiscus helps to relax the walls of blood vessels in conditions of high blood pressure and acts as a diuretic, but unlike most diuretic drugs, it does not deplete the body of potassium. Hibiscus tea is delicious prepared as a either hot tea or drank cold, and can be sweetened by adding a small amount of stevia leaves or honey while brewing the tea. To prepare the pods, first rinse then place into four times the volume of boiling water; reduce the heat and simmer on low for 5 minutes, remove from heat and let stand covered for 10 minutes, strain and sweeten with honey or stevia. Hibiscus blends well making a tasty tea when combined with fennel, rosehips, cinnamon, orange peel or peppermint leaves.
